Every CSM learning objective, in Scrum Alliance's words.
Scrum Alliance publishes the CSM Learning Objectives, last updated January 2022, in three categories with 28 objectives. Each one completes the phrase "Upon successful validation and completion of this course, the learner will be able to..." We've copied them exactly.

Scrum Alliance says these objectives are covered in addition to the Scrum Foundations learning objectives, and they're based on the Scrum Guide, the Manifesto for Agile Software Development with its four values and 12 principles, and the scrum values.
Is CSM right for you?
Scrum Alliance calls CSM an introductory course for people who want to serve as a scrum master, are adopting scrum, or just need the skills to be more agile. It says scrum has grown beyond software, with marketers, data scientists and HR representatives applying it too.
There's no experience requirement. Scrum Alliance notes that certification isn't required to work as a scrum master, but certain employers ask for the CSM as part of a position's qualifications. If you already run sprints, the objectives on facilitation, impediments and technical debt are where you'll likely grow the most.
The CSM test at a glance.
Test details
- Course: 16 hours of training, with most classes spanning 2 to 3 days
- Test: 50 multiple-choice questions, taken online
- Passing: answer 37 of the 50 questions correctly
- Time: the test must be completed in one hour
- Attempts: two attempts within 90 days of finishing the course, included in the course cost
Thirty-seven of 50 works out to 74%, so there's little room for guessing. Questions follow the learning objectives and the Scrum Guide, so we drill accountabilities, events and the definition of done until they're second nature.
Renewal and continuing education.
Each Scrum Alliance certification runs on a two-year renewal cycle from the date you earn it, and Scrum Alliance emails you 90 days before it expires.
To renew CSM you submit 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and pay a $100 renewal fee. One hour of learning equals one SEU.
SEUs can't be bought. You earn them by reading, attending events and webinars, volunteering and similar learning, and they must be earned within the 30 months before renewal.
Taking another Scrum Alliance certification course renews your other Scrum Alliance certifications automatically.
How we prepare you for the CSM test.
Before class, read the Scrum Guide once end to end. It's short, and nearly every test question traces back to it.
During class, we work through the scrum team accountabilities, then run sprint planning, review and retrospective as hands-on exercises, matching objectives 1.8 to 1.10.
Next we practice facilitation techniques for group decision making and talk through the difference between facilitating, teaching, mentoring and coaching.
After class, review the objectives in category 3 on impediments, technical debt and supporting the product owner, since those questions are scenario based.
Then take the test while it's fresh. You've got 90 days and two attempts, but most people do best within a few days of class.
Where CSM can take you.
Scrum masters often sit alongside project and delivery roles, so we use the closest BLS occupation as a reference.
For a sense of pay, BLS puts the May 2025 median annual wage for project management specialists at $102,320. A median is the midpoint, so half earned more and half earned less, and your own pay will depend on location, experience and employer. Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.
