CAPM vs PMP: Which PMI Exam Can You Sit Now?

If you hold a bachelor's degree and you've led projects for at least three of the last ten years, you can apply for PMP now. If you haven't, CAPM is the PMI exam you can sit today. CAPM asks for no project experience at all. You need a secondary diploma, 23 hours of project management education, and you have to be at least 18.

So the deciding question is how much project leadership you can document. Here's how to work that out, and when CAPM makes sense even if PMP is close.

What do you need before you can sit each exam?

PMI sets different gates for each one. These are the requirements on PMI's certification pages as of October 8, 2026.

  • Education:
CAPM: A secondary diploma, such as a high school diploma or GED
PMP: Any level, but your education sets how much experience you need
  • Project experience:
    CAPM: None
PMP: 2 to 5 years leading projects, depending on education
  • Training:
CAPM: 23 hours of project management education before the exam
PMP: 35 hours of project management training, or an active CAPM

How much experience does PMP require?

All of it has to come from the 10 years before you submit your application.

Education: Experience leading projects

  • High school diploma or GED: 5 years (60 months)
  • Associate degree or vocational diploma: 4 years (48 months)
  • Bachelor's degree or higher: 3 years (36 months)
  • Degree from a PMI GAC-accredited program: 2 years (24 months)

PMI counts months, not projects. If two of your projects ran at the same time, the overlapping months count once. The work has to be leading and directing projects in a professional setting. It doesn't have to be paid, but school projects, personal events and home improvement jobs don't qualify, and neither do routine operational tasks.

If you're unsure where you stand, write down each project with its start and end month and add up the calendar months you were leading something. That total decides which exam you can sit.

How are the CAPM and PMP exams different?

CAPM checks whether you know the concepts and the vocabulary. PMP puts you in workplace situations and asks what a project manager should do, which is hard to answer well without having run projects.

  • Questions:
CAPM: 150, of which 135 are scored
PMP: 180, of which 170 are scored
  • Time:
    CAPM: 180 minutes
PMP: 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks
  • Content:
CAPM: Fundamentals and core concepts 36%, business analysis frameworks 27%, agile 20%, predictive 17%
PMP: People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%
  • Attempts:
CAPM: Up to three in one year
PMP: Up to three in your one-year eligibility period
  • Keeping it active:
CAPM: 15 PDUs every three years
PMP: 60 PDUs every three years

The PMP exam changed on July 9, 2026, with much more weight on business environment topics like governance, compliance and organizational change. Our page on whether PMP is worth it in 2026 covers the pay data and who it pays off for.

Should you take CAPM first if you're close to PMP?

That depends on how close. If you're only a few months short of the experience rule, I'd usually skip CAPM and keep logging project time. By the time you've studied for and passed CAPM, you may already qualify for PMP, and PMP is the one most project manager postings name.

CAPM first makes more sense when PMP is two or more years away. It puts a PMI credential on your resume now and teaches the vocabulary PMP builds on. And while it's active, it covers PMP's entire training requirement. PMI's July 2026 exam content outline says an active CAPM holder who meets the education and experience rules doesn't need to document the 35 hours.

Plan for the upkeep, though. CAPM renews every three years with 15 PDUs, so if PMP is three or more years out, you'll need to keep CAPM active until you apply.

Does the December 1, 2026 training rule affect CAPM?

PMI's December 1 change is about PMP training hours. From that date, live PMP prep classes count only when a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited academic program delivers them. Self-paced courses from any organization still count. PMI's CAPM page, checked October 8, 2026, lists the same 23 hours of project management education with no provider rule attached.

That gives CAPM one more use. An active CAPM satisfies PMP's training requirement by itself, so someone who applies for PMP while holding CAPM doesn't have to show 35 hours from any provider.

Who should skip CAPM?

If you already meet PMP's experience rule, go straight to PMP. CAPM would add a second exam and a second renewal without changing much for a hiring manager who's looking for PMP. If you don't expect to work in project roles at all, neither exam is a good use of your money.

CAPM fits project coordinators, analysts, recent graduates and people moving into project work from another field. PMI lists roles like project coordinator, project analyst and assistant project manager for CAPM holders.
