PMP is still worth it in 2026 for most people who manage projects for a living. In PMI's latest salary survey, US respondents with PMP reported a median salary of $135,000, compared with $109,157 for those without it. It's less worth it if you don't yet meet PMI's experience rule or if your field doesn't use project managers.
One change matters this year. Starting December 1, 2026, PMI will count live classes toward the 35 training hours only when a PMI Authorized Training Partner or another approved provider delivers them. I'll cover what that means below.
Is PMP still relevant in 2026?
Yes. PMI says more than 1.7 million people hold PMP, which makes it the most widely held project certification in the world. Recruiters search for it by name, and it shows up in postings from construction to software.
The work itself is growing too. BLS projects project management specialist jobs to grow 7 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 76,500 openings a year. The same BLS profile says certification may be beneficial for job seekers in the field.
People sometimes ask me if agile has made PMP obsolete. It hasn't. PMI's current exam covers predictive, agile and hybrid approaches, and the weights are People 33 percent, Process 41 percent and Business Environment 26 percent. The exam is 180 questions in 240 minutes, and the scenarios often ask which approach fits the situation, so knowing only one method won't carry you.
What's the PMP pay difference in the US?
Here's what PMI's 14th salary survey reported for the United States. PMI fielded it from March 9 to April 19, 2025, with 14,628 respondents across 21 countries.

That's what PMI calls a nearly 24 percent difference between PMP holders and non-holders in the US. Across all 21 countries, PMI found a 17 percent gap. BLS, which doesn't track certifications, puts the median for project management specialists at $102,320 as of May 2025.
I'd read the survey carefully. PMP holders tend to have more experience, and experience pays on its own. Still, the gap is large and it holds across countries, which tells me the cert carries real weight in hiring. I go deeper on the numbers on our PMP salary page.
Who is PMP worth it for?
It pays off most for people who already lead projects and want the title, the pay or the next job to match. That includes IT project managers, engineers who've moved into running projects, and program coordinators ready to step up.
For engineers specifically, PMP is a common bridge into management. If you're already planning schedules, handling budgets and managing vendors, PMP gives you a shared vocabulary with the business side and a credential that hiring managers recognize.
It's worth it for government and contractor work too. CompTIA even lists IT project manager as a DoD 8140 work role for Security+, which shows how often project management and IT roles overlap in defense jobs.
Who should wait on PMP?
If you don't meet the experience rule, you can't sit the exam yet. PMI requires project management experience from the last 10 years, based on your education. Our guide on how to get PMP certification covers how to list that experience on the application.
Education: Experience managing projects
- High school diploma: 5 years
- Associate degree or vocational diploma: 4 years
- Bachelor's degree or higher: 3 years
- Degree from a PMI GAC-accredited program: 2 years
Overlapping projects don't count twice. Earlier in your career, CAPM is PMI's entry-level cert, and an active CAPM also satisfies the PMP training requirement. You can also wait if your employer doesn't use formal project roles at all. PMP helps most where the title exists.
One more thing to weigh. PMP asks for real effort on top of the exam: 60 professional development units every three years to keep it. If you don't plan to stay in project work, that upkeep may not be worth it for you.
What changes on December 1, 2026?
You need 35 hours of project management training to apply. PMI says self-paced courses from any organization count. Starting December 1, 2026, live classes, whether in person or online, count only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher-ed program delivers them.
