Accountability

Definition

Accountability is the obligation of an individual or entity to accept responsibility for their actions, decisions, and outcomes. It ensures that someone is answerable for the results of their work, fostering trust and reliability within technology environments. In practice, accountability is established through clear roles, documented processes, and audit trails that track who did what and when. This is crucial for maintaining security, compliance, and operational integrity, as it allows for the identification and remediation of issues. For instance, a system administrator is accountable for patching servers, and a security analyst is accountable for investigating security alerts. Accountability differs from responsibility, which is the duty to perform a task. accountability is the consequence of that performance. This concept is frequently assessed in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
