Adaptation

PathTerms

Definition

Adaptation refers to the process of adjusting a system, process, or strategy to fit new or changing circumstances. This involves modifying existing elements or introducing new ones to maintain effectiveness and achieve desired outcomes in a dynamic environment. In practice, adaptation means proactively identifying shifts in requirements, technology, or the competitive landscape and making necessary modifications to stay relevant and successful. It matters on the job because organizations that fail to adapt risk obsolescence, inefficiency, and loss of market share. For example, a software company adapting to cloud computing by offering its services as a SaaS model instead of on premises demonstrates successful adaptation. This differs from simple iteration, which is a minor refinement, whereas adaptation often involves more significant structural or functional changes. Adaptation is a key concept tested in project management certifications like PMP and PMI-ACP, as well as in IT strategy domains.
