Attack Narratives

PathTerms

Definition

Attack Narratives are structured stories that describe how threat actors might compromise systems, applications, or data. They detail the adversary's motivations, tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) from initial access through to achieving their objectives. In practice, these narratives help security teams anticipate potential threats and develop effective defenses by visualizing attack paths. Understanding attack narratives is crucial for proactive risk management and building resilient security architectures. For example, an attack narrative might describe how a phishing email leads to credential theft, lateral movement, and ultimately, data exfiltration. This differs from simple threat intelligence, which focuses on known indicators of compromise, by providing a contextualized sequence of events. Attack Narratives are a key concept tested in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
