Attack Surfaces

PathTerms

Definition

An attack surface represents all the potential points where an unauthorized user can try to enter or extract data from an environment. This includes hardware, software, and even human elements that could be exploited. In practice, organizations map their attack surfaces to identify vulnerabilities and implement security controls. Understanding and minimizing the attack surface is crucial for reducing risk and protecting sensitive information. For instance, a web application's attack surface includes its login page, APIs, and underlying server infrastructure. It is distinct from a threat model, which analyzes potential threats rather than the points of entry themselves. This concept is fundamental to cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
