Definition
An Azure Subscription is a logical container that holds Azure resources and provides a billing boundary for those resources. It acts as a management unit, allowing organizations to organize their cloud services, control access, and track costs. Subscriptions are fundamental to how Azure resources are provisioned, managed, and billed, enabling granular control over cloud environments. In practice, a subscription is created when a user signs up for Azure services, and all resources deployed within that subscription are associated with it. Understanding subscriptions is crucial for effective cloud governance, cost management, and security posture within Azure. For instance, a development team might have its own subscription to isolate its projects from production environments, preventing accidental changes. Unlike an Azure resource group, which organizes resources within a subscription, a subscription itself defines the scope of billing and access policies. This concept is frequently tested on cloud certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect and CCSP.
