Definition
Behavioral detection is a cybersecurity approach that identifies malicious activity by analyzing deviations from normal system or user behavior. Instead of relying solely on known threat signatures, it establishes a baseline of expected actions and flags anomalies that suggest an ongoing attack. This method is crucial for detecting novel threats and insider actions that might evade traditional signature-based defenses. For instance, a user suddenly accessing or transferring unusually large amounts of sensitive data outside of typical working hours would trigger a behavioral alert. This differs from signature-based detection, which looks for known patterns of malware. Behavioral detection is a key concept tested on CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP certifications.
