Definition
Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD, is a policy that allows employees to use their personal devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops, for work-related purposes. This approach enables individuals to leverage familiar technology while reducing organizational hardware costs. In practice, BYOD requires robust security measures to protect sensitive company data on these personal devices. It matters on the job because it can increase employee productivity and satisfaction by allowing them to work with tools they prefer. For example, a salesperson might use their personal tablet to access customer relationship management software and present product information. This differs from corporate owned, personally enabled (COPE) devices, which are company-issued but allow personal use. BYOD concepts are frequently tested in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
