Definition

Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures, or CVE, is a publicly accessible dictionary that assigns a unique identifier to each known cybersecurity vulnerability. This standardized naming system ensures that security professionals, software vendors, and researchers can consistently refer to and discuss specific weaknesses in systems and applications. When a vulnerability is discovered, it is assigned a CVE ID, which then allows for tracking and remediation efforts across different organizations and tools. For instance, a CVE ID like CVE-2023-12345 might be referenced in security advisories, vulnerability scan reports, and patch management systems. It is important to note that a CVE ID itself does not indicate the severity of a vulnerability. this requires additional scoring systems such as CVSS. Understanding CVEs is crucial for roles covered by CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and AWS certifications.
