Definition

A configuration item, or CI, is any component of a system that needs to be managed to deliver an IT service. This includes hardware, software, documentation, or even people. In practice, CIs are tracked within a configuration management system to understand the relationships between different components and their impact on services. Knowing what constitutes a CI is crucial for effective IT asset management, change control, and incident resolution, as it provides a baseline for system understanding. For example, a specific server, including its operating system and installed applications, is a CI. CIs are distinct from general assets. they are items that have been formally recognized and controlled within the IT environment. This concept is fundamental in ITIL frameworks and appears in certifications like CompTIA Security+ and ITIL Foundation.
