Control gap

PathTerms

Definition

A control gap represents a deficiency or weakness in an organization's security posture where a potential threat or vulnerability is not adequately addressed by existing security controls. It signifies a mismatch between the identified risks and the implemented safeguards, creating an opening for malicious actors or operational failures. In practice, identifying and closing control gaps involves a continuous process of risk assessment, control evaluation, and implementation of new or improved security measures. Addressing these gaps is crucial for maintaining a robust defense, protecting sensitive data, and ensuring business continuity. For instance, a control gap might exist if an organization has strong network firewalls but lacks adequate endpoint protection on employee devices. This differs from a vulnerability, which is a specific weakness, whereas a control gap is the absence of a necessary safeguard. Control gap concepts are frequently tested on cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CISSP.
