Data Lifecycle Controls

PathTerms

Definition

Data lifecycle controls are the policies, procedures, and technical measures implemented to manage data from its creation through its eventual deletion or archival. These controls ensure data is handled appropriately at each stage, including collection, storage, usage, sharing, archiving, and destruction. In practice, they automate or guide actions based on data type, sensitivity, and regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance and security. Understanding these controls is crucial for protecting sensitive information, meeting legal obligations, and optimizing data storage costs. For instance, a financial institution might use data lifecycle controls to automatically encrypt customer transaction data upon creation, retain it for seven years, and then securely purge it. This differs from simple data retention policies by encompassing a broader range of actions and considerations across the entire data lifespan. Data lifecycle controls are a key concept in IT security domains like CompTIA Security+ and cloud security certifications such as CCSP.
