Data warehouse

Definition

A data warehouse is a centralized repository designed to store and manage large volumes of historical data from various sources within an organization. It integrates data from transactional systems, operational databases, and external sources into a single, consistent format optimized for analysis and reporting. Data warehouses facilitate business intelligence by enabling users to query and analyze data to identify trends, patterns, and insights that drive strategic decision-making. For instance, a retail company might use a data warehouse to consolidate sales data from all its stores to understand regional performance. Unlike a transactional database which focuses on current operations, a data warehouse prioritizes historical data for analytical purposes. This concept is frequently tested on cloud security certifications like CCSP and AWS specialty exams.
