Definition
Data refers to raw facts, figures, or observations that can be collected, processed, and interpreted to yield meaningful information. It exists in various forms, including numbers, text, images, and sounds, and serves as the fundamental building block for knowledge and decision-making. In practice, data is gathered from diverse sources, such as user interactions, sensor readings, or system logs, and then transformed through analysis and organization. Understanding and managing data is crucial for identifying trends, optimizing processes, and ensuring the security of information assets. For instance, a web server log containing records of user visits, IP addresses, and requested pages is a form of data that can be analyzed to understand website traffic patterns. While often used interchangeably with information, data is the unprocessed input, whereas information is the processed and contextualized output derived from data. This concept is fundamental across many IT certifications, including CompTIA Security+ and AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate.
