Deception technology

PathTerms

Definition

Deception technology is a cybersecurity strategy that uses decoys and fake assets to lure, detect, and analyze malicious actors. It creates an environment of false targets, such as fake servers, applications, or data, designed to attract attackers away from legitimate systems. By engaging with these decoys, attackers reveal their presence, methods, and intentions without posing a real threat to production environments. This early detection allows security teams to respond proactively, gather threat intelligence, and strengthen defenses against genuine attacks. For instance, a honeypot server mimicking a vulnerable web application can trap an intruder attempting to exploit it. Unlike intrusion detection systems that monitor network traffic for known threats, deception technology actively entices attackers into revealing themselves. This concept is frequently tested on CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP certification exams.
