Denial of service

Also called: DoS

PathTerms

Definition

A denial of service DoS attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal functioning of a network, server, or website by overwhelming it with a flood of illegitimate traffic. Attackers achieve this by exploiting vulnerabilities or simply by sending more requests than the target system can handle, causing it to slow down or become completely unavailable to legitimate users. Understanding DoS attacks is crucial for IT professionals as it directly impacts system availability, user experience, and business operations, potentially leading to significant financial losses. For instance, a common DoS attack involves bombarding a web server with connection requests, preventing real users from accessing the site. This differs from a distributed denial of service DDoS attack, which uses multiple compromised systems to launch the assault, making it harder to trace and mitigate. DoS concepts are fundamental to cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
