Detection Engineering

PathTerms

Definition

Detection Engineering is the practice of designing, building, and implementing systems that identify and alert on malicious activity within an organization's IT environment. It involves creating specific rules, logic, and signatures that can distinguish between normal system behavior and potential security threats. This proactive approach is crucial for minimizing the impact of cyberattacks by enabling rapid response and containment. For instance, a detection engineer might develop a rule to flag unusual login patterns from a specific geographic location, indicating a potential account compromise. Unlike threat hunting, which is more exploratory, detection engineering focuses on creating automated, repeatable detection mechanisms. This skill is foundational for roles tested in CompTIA CySA+ and CISSP examinations.
