Definition
Detection processes are the systematic methods and tools organizations use to identify potential threats, vulnerabilities, or anomalies within their IT environments. These processes involve continuous monitoring, logging, and analysis of system activities to spot deviations from normal behavior that could indicate a security incident or operational issue. Implementing robust detection processes is crucial for minimizing the impact of security breaches and operational disruptions by enabling swift response and remediation. For instance, a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system correlating firewall logs with user login attempts to detect unauthorized access is a common detection process. Unlike intrusion prevention systems that actively block threats, detection processes focus on identifying them after they have occurred or are in progress. This concept is frequently assessed in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and PenTest+, as well as in cloud security domains.
