Deterrent control

PathTerms

Definition

A deterrent control is a security measure designed to discourage potential attackers from attempting an intrusion. It works by making the target appear less attractive or more difficult to compromise, thereby reducing the likelihood of an attack. Implementing deterrent controls is crucial for proactively reducing risk and preventing security incidents before they occur. For instance, visible security cameras and warning signs about surveillance can deter vandals or opportunistic thieves. Unlike preventive controls that block access, deterrent controls aim to influence behavior and prevent the attempt itself. This concept is frequently tested on certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CISSP.
