Distributed tracing

PathTerms

Definition

Distributed tracing is a method used to monitor and understand requests as they travel through complex, distributed systems. It works by assigning a unique ID to each request and then tracking its journey across multiple services, databases, and components, recording timing and metadata at each hop. This visibility is crucial for diagnosing performance bottlenecks, identifying errors, and optimizing the overall user experience in microservices architectures. For instance, a customer placing an order might have their request traced from the web frontend through inventory, payment processing, and shipping services to pinpoint a slow database query. Unlike simple logging, which captures events within a single service, distributed tracing connects events across an entire transaction. This concept is relevant for cloud certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect and CCSP, as well as for project management exams like PMP.
