Endpoint Escapes

PathTerms

Definition

Endpoint escapes refer to security vulnerabilities where malicious code or an attacker breaks out of an isolated environment on an endpoint device, such as a virtual machine or container. This allows them to gain unauthorized access to the host operating system or other sensitive resources. In practice, endpoint escapes exploit flaws in the isolation mechanisms designed to contain threats. Understanding these escapes is crucial for defenders to implement robust security controls and prevent lateral movement within a network. For instance, a successful escape from a sandboxed web browser could allow malware to infect the entire user's computer. This differs from privilege escalation, which involves gaining higher access within the same system rather than breaking out of a contained environment. Concepts related to endpoint escapes are frequently tested in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
