Endpoint Protection & Detection

PathTerms

Definition

Endpoint Protection and Detection (EPD) refers to a suite of security technologies designed to safeguard individual devices, such as laptops, desktops, and mobile phones, from cyber threats. It combines preventative measures like antivirus and firewalls with advanced threat detection capabilities, including behavioral analysis and anomaly detection. EPD actively monitors endpoints for suspicious activities and automatically responds to potential attacks, thereby minimizing damage and data breaches. For instance, EPD can identify and quarantine a ransomware attack before it encrypts critical files on an employee's workstation. Unlike traditional antivirus software that relies on known malware signatures, EPD uses more sophisticated techniques to detect novel and evolving threats. This concept is fundamental to cybersecurity domains and frequently tested in certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
