Definition
Endpoint security refers to the practice of protecting individual devices, such as laptops, desktops, servers, and mobile phones, from cyber threats. It involves implementing a range of technical controls and processes to detect, prevent, and respond to malicious activities targeting these endpoints. In practice, this often includes antivirus software, endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions, firewalls, and regular software updates. Protecting endpoints is crucial because they are often the initial entry points for attackers into an organization's network. For example, a phishing email successfully tricking a user into downloading malware onto their workstation is a common endpoint compromise scenario. Unlike network security which focuses on the perimeter, endpoint security deals with threats that bypass or originate within the network boundary. This vital concept is covered in certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
