Entitlement management

PathTerms

Definition

Entitlement management is the process of defining, granting, and revoking access rights and permissions for users, systems, or applications within an organization. It ensures that individuals and entities only have the necessary privileges to perform their specific roles and functions, adhering to the principle of least privilege. This systematic approach to access control is crucial for maintaining security, compliance, and operational efficiency. In practice, entitlement management involves establishing clear policies for access requests, approvals, and regular audits to verify that permissions remain appropriate. It matters on the job because it directly mitigates the risk of unauthorized access, data breaches, and insider threats, thereby protecting sensitive information and system integrity. For example, an IT administrator uses entitlement management to grant a new employee access only to the specific software and data required for their department, not the entire network. This differs from role-based access control (RBAC) in that entitlement management focuses on the specific permissions assigned to an identity, whereas RBAC groups permissions into roles. Understanding entitlement management is vital for cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
