Eradication

PathTerms

Definition

Eradication refers to the complete removal or elimination of a threat, vulnerability, or unwanted element from a system or environment. This process goes beyond mere containment or mitigation, aiming to ensure the threat can no longer exist or cause harm. In practice, eradication involves identifying the root cause and then systematically dismantling or removing it. This is crucial for maintaining system integrity, preventing recurrence, and protecting sensitive data. For instance, after a malware infection, eradication involves not only removing the malicious software but also patching the exploited vulnerability. A common point of confusion is mistaking eradication for disinfection, which might remove the malware but leave the underlying weakness exploitable. This concept is frequently tested in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
