Definition

ESX refers to VMware's flagship hypervisor, a bare-metal virtualization platform that installs directly onto a server's hardware. It enables multiple virtual machines to run concurrently on a single physical machine, abstracting the hardware resources. This allows for efficient resource utilization and consolidation of workloads, significantly reducing hardware costs and power consumption. For instance, a company can host several different operating systems and applications on one powerful server instead of needing many individual machines. Unlike Type 2 hypervisors such as VMware Workstation, ESX runs directly on the hardware, offering superior performance and stability for enterprise environments. Knowledge of ESX is often tested in advanced IT infrastructure and cloud computing certification exams.
