Event Response

PathTerms

Definition

Event Response refers to the structured process an organization follows to detect, analyze, and react to security incidents or other critical events. This involves having predefined procedures and a dedicated team to manage the lifecycle of an event, from initial alert to final resolution and post-incident review. In practice, it means having playbooks ready to guide actions when a security alert is triggered, ensuring swift and coordinated efforts. Effective event response is crucial for minimizing damage, restoring normal operations quickly, and preventing future occurrences. For instance, a sudden surge in unauthorized login attempts might trigger an event response protocol to isolate affected systems and investigate the source. This differs from simple incident reporting, as it encompasses the active management and mitigation of the event itself. Event Response is a key concept in domains like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
