Definition

Helm is a package manager for Kubernetes, simplifying the deployment and management of applications. It uses a packaging format called charts, which are collections of pre-configured Kubernetes resources. Helm automates the process of defining, installing, and upgrading even complex Kubernetes applications, making it a crucial tool for developers and operators. By abstracting away much of the complexity of Kubernetes manifests, Helm allows teams to deploy applications consistently and reproducibly across different environments. For example, deploying a multi-tier web application with databases and caching layers can be streamlined using a single Helm chart. While Helm simplifies deployments, misunderstanding chart dependencies or versioning can lead to unexpected application behavior. This concept is frequently encountered in cloud native environments and is relevant for certifications like the AWS Certified Solutions Architect and the (ISC)² CCSP.
