Definition
A honeypot is a decoy computer system or network resource intentionally set up to attract and trap cyber attackers. It appears to be a legitimate target, containing valuable information or vulnerabilities, but is isolated from the actual production environment. By luring adversaries into this controlled space, security professionals can observe their tactics, techniques, and procedures without risking real assets. This intelligence gathering is crucial for understanding emerging threats and strengthening defenses against future attacks. For instance, a honeypot might mimic a vulnerable web server to capture exploit attempts. Unlike a firewall, which blocks threats, a honeypot actively invites them to learn their methods. This concept is frequently tested on CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP certification exams.
