Definition

HTTP, or Hypertext Transfer Protocol, is a foundational network protocol used for transmitting hypermedia documents, such as HTML, across the internet. It defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands. In practice, when you type a web address into your browser, HTTP is the language your browser uses to request that page from the web server. Understanding HTTP is crucial for anyone involved in web development, network security, or system administration, as it underpins how information is exchanged online. For instance, when you click a link on a website, your browser sends an HTTP GET request to the server to retrieve the content of that page. It is important not to confuse HTTP with HTTPS, which adds a layer of encryption for secure communication. This concept is frequently tested on certifications like CompTIA Security+, CISSP, and CCSP, and is a core component of web architecture.
