Identity and access management (IAM) establishes and enforces rules for who or what can access digital resources. It is the security practice of ensuring that the right entities have the appropriate access to the right resources at the right times for the right reasons. IAM systems manage the entire lifecycle of digital identities, from creation and authentication to authorization and eventual removal. This involves verifying user credentials, granting specific permissions based on roles, and auditing access logs to detect suspicious activity. Implementing robust IAM is crucial for protecting sensitive data, preventing unauthorized access, and maintaining compliance with regulations. For instance, an IAM policy might allow a marketing team member to access customer relationship management software but prevent them from accessing financial records. A common point of confusion is mistaking IAM for simple password management, whereas IAM encompasses a much broader framework of controls. This foundational security concept is heavily featured on certifications like CompTIA Security+, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, and CISSP.
