IDS Fundamentals

Definition

Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are security tools designed to monitor network traffic or system activities for malicious actions or policy violations. They analyze data for known threat signatures or anomalous behavior, alerting administrators when suspicious patterns are detected. An IDS acts as a passive observer, generating alerts without directly intervening to block threats. This capability is crucial for identifying security breaches in progress, allowing for timely incident response and mitigation. For instance, an IDS might flag a sudden surge of outbound traffic to an unknown IP address as a potential data exfiltration attempt. Unlike an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), an IDS does not automatically block the detected threat. Knowledge of IDS fundamentals is commonly tested in CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and PenTest+ certifications.
