Internet gateway

Definition

An internet gateway is a component within a cloud provider's network that enables communication between resources in a virtual private cloud (VPC) and the public internet. It acts as a target for traffic originating from your VPC and destined for the internet, translating private IP addresses to public ones. Properly configuring an internet gateway is crucial for allowing your cloud applications to access external services or for making them accessible to users worldwide. For instance, a web server hosted in a VPC needs an internet gateway to serve content to visitors on the internet. This differs from a NAT gateway, which allows instances without public IP addresses to initiate outbound connections to the internet but does not permit inbound connections initiated from the internet. Understanding internet gateways is fundamental for cloud networking and security, appearing in AWS certification exams like the Solutions Architect Associate and CompTIA Network+.
