Definition
An Intrusion Prevention System IPS is a network security device or software application that monitors network traffic for malicious activity or policy violations. It analyzes traffic patterns and content to identify and block threats in real time. IPS actively intervenes by dropping malicious packets, blocking traffic from suspicious sources, or resetting connections to prevent attacks. Implementing an IPS is crucial for protecting sensitive data and maintaining the integrity of an organization's network infrastructure. For example, an IPS can detect and stop a distributed denial of service DDoS attack by identifying and filtering out the flood of illegitimate requests. Unlike an Intrusion Detection System IDS which only alerts administrators, an IPS takes automated action to stop threats. You will encounter IPS concepts on CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP certification exams.
