Definition
IT asset management, or ITAM, is the practice of systematically tracking and managing an organization's technology hardware and software throughout their lifecycle. This involves maintaining an accurate inventory of all IT assets, from servers and laptops to software licenses and cloud subscriptions. By understanding what assets are owned, where they are located, and how they are utilized, organizations can make informed decisions about procurement, deployment, and disposal. Effective ITAM is crucial for optimizing IT spending, ensuring compliance with licensing agreements, and mitigating security risks. For instance, an ITAM system can alert administrators when a software license is nearing expiration or when an unauthorized device connects to the network. Unlike simple inventory tracking, ITAM encompasses financial, contractual, and risk management aspects of IT assets. This concept is frequently covered in IT certifications such as CompTIA Security+ and AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate.
