Masking

Also called: Data masking

PathTerms

Definition

Masking, also known as data masking, is the process of obscuring sensitive data with realistic but fictitious data, making it unusable for unauthorized individuals while preserving its structure and format. This technique involves replacing original data with altered versions, such as substituting names with pseudonyms or replacing credit card numbers with valid but non-existent ones. Masking is crucial for protecting sensitive information during development, testing, or analytics, allowing organizations to work with realistic datasets without exposing actual customer or proprietary details. For instance, a financial institution might mask customer account numbers in a test database to prevent accidental exposure during software development. It is distinct from encryption, which scrambles data and requires a key for decryption, whereas masked data is permanently altered and not intended to be recovered. This concept is frequently covered in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
