Mean time to respond

Also called: MTTR

PathTerms

Definition

Mean time to respond MTTR is a key metric in cybersecurity and IT operations that measures the average duration from the moment a security incident is detected until the moment effective remediation actions begin. It quantifies the speed and efficiency of an organization's incident response process, encompassing detection, analysis, containment, and initial recovery efforts. Reducing MTTR is crucial for minimizing the potential damage, financial losses, and reputational harm associated with security breaches. For instance, if a phishing attack is identified at 9 AM and the security team begins blocking the malicious sender and resetting affected user passwords by 9:30 AM, the response time for that incident is 30 minutes. MTTR is often confused with mean time to repair, which focuses solely on the time taken to restore a system after a failure, whereas MTTR encompasses the entire response lifecycle. This metric is frequently encountered in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP, as well as in IT service management frameworks.
