Multi-site active-active

PathTerms

Definition

Multi-site active-active refers to a high availability and disaster recovery strategy where identical copies of an application or service are deployed across multiple geographically distinct data centers or cloud regions. Each site is fully operational and capable of serving user requests independently, meaning traffic can be directed to any available site at any time. This architecture ensures continuous operation and minimal downtime, as a failure in one location does not impact the availability of the service. For instance, a global e-commerce platform might use multi-site active-active to serve customers from different continents, routing them to the nearest operational data center. This differs from active-passive setups where a secondary site only takes over after a primary site fails. This concept is crucial for understanding resilient cloud architectures and appears on exams like the CCSP and AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate.
