Networking with NSX

PathTerms

Definition

Networking with NSX refers to the use of VMware's network virtualization platform to create and manage virtual networks that are decoupled from the physical network hardware. It allows for the programmatic creation, provisioning, and management of network services, abstracting the underlying physical infrastructure. This approach enables the creation of highly agile and secure network environments, essential for modern data centers and cloud deployments. NSX functions by creating a software overlay network that runs on top of the physical network, allowing for microsegmentation and granular security policies to be applied at the individual workload level. This is crucial for reducing the attack surface and containing breaches, significantly enhancing overall security posture. For instance, NSX can be used to automatically deploy security policies to new virtual machines as they are provisioned, ensuring consistent protection. Unlike traditional physical network segmentation, NSX offers dynamic and policy driven isolation, making it far more flexible. This concept is frequently encountered in advanced networking and cloud security certifications such as CISSP and CCSP.
