Observability is the ability to understand the internal state of a system by examining its outputs. It goes beyond traditional monitoring by enabling you to ask new questions about your system's behavior without needing to deploy new code. This is achieved by collecting telemetry data, such as logs, metrics, and traces, from all parts of your application and infrastructure. Understanding system behavior through observability is crucial for troubleshooting complex issues, optimizing performance, and ensuring overall system reliability. For instance, an e-commerce platform might use observability to pinpoint why a specific customer's checkout process is failing. Unlike monitoring, which focuses on known unknowns, observability helps uncover unknown unknowns by providing deep insights into system operations. This concept is frequently tested on cloud certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect and CCSP.
