OT Systems

PathTerms

Definition

Operational Technology (OT) systems encompass the hardware and software that monitor and control physical processes, devices, and infrastructure. These systems are distinct from traditional Information Technology (IT) systems, focusing on the direct management of industrial operations. OT systems are crucial for maintaining the safety, efficiency, and reliability of critical infrastructure and manufacturing environments. For instance, a power grid's SCADA system, which manages electricity distribution, is a prime example of an OT system. Unlike IT systems that prioritize data confidentiality, OT systems often prioritize availability and integrity to prevent disruptions to physical operations. Understanding OT systems is vital for cybersecurity professionals, particularly in domains like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+ which cover industrial control system security.
