Definition

Patching is the process of updating software or hardware with code changes designed to fix bugs, address security vulnerabilities, or improve performance. These updates, known as patches, are released by vendors to maintain the integrity and functionality of their products. In practice, patching involves identifying, acquiring, testing, and deploying these updates across systems and applications. It is crucial for maintaining a secure and stable IT environment, preventing exploits that target known weaknesses. For instance, applying a security patch to a web server closes a vulnerability that could otherwise allow attackers to compromise the system. Unlike a full upgrade which replaces entire software versions, patching typically involves smaller, targeted code modifications. This concept is frequently tested on CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and PenTest+ certifications, as well as in CISSP and CCSP domains related to security operations.
