Penetration Test Planning

PathTerms

Definition

Penetration Test Planning is the critical process of defining the scope, objectives, rules of engagement, and methodologies for a simulated cyberattack against an organization's systems. This involves identifying target assets, determining the types of tests to be performed, and establishing communication protocols between the testing team and the organization's stakeholders. Effective planning ensures the test is conducted safely, ethically, and efficiently, minimizing disruption to normal operations while maximizing the discovery of vulnerabilities. For instance, a plan might detail that only external web applications will be tested during business hours, with no denial of service attacks attempted. This differs from a vulnerability assessment, which typically scans for known weaknesses without actively exploiting them. Penetration testing concepts are frequently assessed in CompTIA PenTest+ and CySA+ certifications.
