A performance-based question, or PBQ, is an exam item that requires you to perform a task or solve a problem in a simulated environment rather than simply selecting an answer from a list. These questions assess your ability to apply knowledge and skills in a practical context, mirroring real-world IT challenges. By interacting with a simulated system, you demonstrate your understanding of how to configure, troubleshoot, or manage technology. This hands-on approach is crucial because it validates your competency in performing actual job functions, not just recalling facts. For instance, a PBQ might ask you to configure a firewall rule set to meet specific security requirements, directly testing your practical security skills. Unlike traditional multiple-choice questions that test recall, PBQs measure your ability to execute tasks. You will encounter these types of questions on many CompTIA certifications, including Security+, CySA+, and PenTest+.
