Perimeter & Endpoint

PathTerms

Definition

Perimeter and endpoint refer to the boundaries and access points of a network or system. The perimeter represents the outer edge, like firewalls and network gateways, while endpoints are the individual devices or systems connected to it, such as computers, servers, and mobile devices. In practice, security measures are implemented at both the perimeter to control external access and at endpoints to protect individual devices from threats. Understanding these concepts is crucial for effective cybersecurity, as it helps organizations identify vulnerabilities and implement appropriate controls. For example, a company might use a firewall at its network perimeter to block unauthorized traffic and antivirus software on employee laptops as endpoint protection. While often discussed together, the perimeter focuses on network-level defense, whereas endpoints concentrate on individual device security. This terminology is frequently encountered in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
