Definition

Peripherals are external hardware devices that connect to a computer to expand its functionality. These devices are not essential for the computer's basic operation but enhance its capabilities for specific tasks. They work by communicating with the computer's central processing unit (CPU) through various interfaces like USB, HDMI, or Bluetooth. Understanding peripherals is crucial for IT professionals as they are responsible for selecting, installing, and troubleshooting these components to meet user needs and maintain system efficiency. For example, a network administrator might install a high-capacity external hard drive to back up critical server data. Unlike internal components like RAM or the motherboard, peripherals are typically removable and user-replaceable. Knowledge of peripherals is fundamental for IT support roles and appears on foundational IT certifications such as CompTIA A+.
