Persistence in Kubernetes

PathTerms

Definition

Persistence in Kubernetes refers to the ability of data to survive the lifecycle of a pod. Kubernetes itself is designed for ephemeral workloads, meaning containers and pods can be created and destroyed frequently. Persistence ensures that application data, like databases or user uploads, is not lost when a pod restarts or is rescheduled to a different node. This is achieved through Kubernetes objects like PersistentVolumes and PersistentVolumeClaims, which abstract the underlying storage. Understanding persistence is crucial for deploying stateful applications reliably in a Kubernetes environment. For instance, a web application storing user session data needs persistent storage to maintain continuity. This differs from temporary storage within a pod, which is lost upon pod termination. You will encounter persistence concepts on AWS certification exams like the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate and in cloud security certifications like CCSP.
