Definition

PIAs, or Privacy Impact Assessments, are systematic processes for identifying and mitigating privacy risks associated with new or existing technology systems, projects, or data processing activities. They involve evaluating how personal information is collected, used, stored, shared, and retained to ensure compliance with privacy laws and regulations. PIAs are crucial for building trust with customers and stakeholders by demonstrating a commitment to protecting sensitive data. For instance, a PIA might be conducted before launching a new mobile application that collects user location data to assess potential privacy vulnerabilities. This differs from a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA), which is a similar but often broader term used primarily under GDPR. Understanding PIAs is essential for roles covered by certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CISSP.
